I’m a recent graduate student from Moss Landing Marine Labs, and my
thesis was on the kelp forest canopies of the Monterey Bay area. I used
old aerial photographs from the 1980s to see how the canopy changed over
time and space, and have found that the region-wide canopy is quite
predictable, but varies substantially at small spatial scales. My day job
is working as a marine biologist in Glacier Bay, Alaska. There I study the
effects of sea otters (1800 of them!) on subtidal marine communities as
they move back into the bay after being gone for over 200 years. But
Glacier Bay wasn’t cold enough for me, so that’s why I’m going to
Antarctica! While in Antarctica, I’ll also be working on a side-project
in addition to Stacy’s study, in which I’ll be looking at the effects
of penguin guano on marine communities at Cape Royds (at the ice edge).
